Since the age of 14, Ying-Poi has been fascinated by – and obsessed with – filmmaking. And it’s a passion that’s only intensified ever since.
After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Scriptwriting from WITS University, Ying-Poi hit the ground running. First with an award-winning documentary called “Strike A Rock”, filmed largely in Marikana, and then, drawing on her love of music from a young age, with a series of groundbreaking music videos.
And she was just getting started.
Her first break with a production company saw her building a firm foundation of film and advertising knowledge as a creative researcher, and it wasn’t long before she caught the eye of an established production company and offered the position of Junior Director.
Which is when she really got going.
Because after her first commercial was placed top in Adforum’s monthly Top 5 Production Directors, the only way to go was up. And now, after 10 years in the industry, Ying-Poi has built herself a reputation for fine tuning simple narratives with a powerful emotional pull.
As Spitfire’s newest Director, Ying-Poi is perfectly primed to take on exciting new challenges with all the energy and craft of a seasoned filmmaker, but the same fascination and passion for film she’s had since she was 14.
So while she’s just getting started at Spitfire, she’s already flying. Watch this space.
